OMG! It's happening again!
What is it with me.. yet another new job!
It is good though.. I think.
It takes a while to get to Dundee Beach: Finding a place to stay in Darwin (thanks Kim!). Finding the road: turning off the Stuart highway 4 k after the petro station.. we skirt Litchfield Park along the Cox penninsula.. turning off that road and onto the Fog River road at the sign with the big fish.. only to discover numerous 'crossings'. The road is bitumen though.. at least most of the way.
The school is at the end of the bitumen: easy. The beach is five k later along a flooded mud road and everyone tells us to watch for crocs and stingers. If there is an actual settlement of Dundee, I have yet to see it. We buy fruit and a few veggies from one of those unmanned road-side stands. The 'social club' is a trailer about a kilometer from the school.. it's open on Friday and Saturday nights.. and serves beer. People here seem to live on large blocks of land.. many with mango groves or huge gadens. My TA's husband works on an American oil rig, just off India. Another couple work in Palmerston, making the 120 k drive daily! "No worries in the Dry" they tell us.
I am sure it will all look different once the rain stops. But for now, I am not at all disappointed that our car, a little Toyota Yaris, won't be arriving for a number of weeks. It wouldn't make that drive.
I have been busy.. but not cleaning or organizing the school which is how I have spent a lot of my time working in the Territory: That has all been done for me, exceptionally well! Dundee Beach takes care of it's stuff, and there is lots of stuff for me to pick and choose my way through. The yards are beautiful, and clean. I figure the great shape of things here has something to do with the Teaching Principals, but it may have more to do with the Teaching Aid.
She is awesome! Last year Sandy worked full time as a TA, and the school also hired a gardener and cleaner. But this year, with cutbacks and great political flourish. .. Sandy will do it all.
I have been busy getting a clearer picture on what I will be teaching. How do you prepare for kids from k- grade 6? My head is spinning and I was running around the classroom starting this and that... laminating, reading, creating worksheets, photocopying, taking things down, putting things up, getting my computer working, ..talking to people... blahhhhh!
It is going to be a little.. challenging? and maybe a lot of fun? I think so!
It's still 'The Wet' here in the 'Top End'. Once the water settles down a bit, so will my nerves and the 'newness' of it all. Insha'alla1
