Saltwater Crocs are big.. and dangerous. And, they don't actually live in salt water.. they like the freshwater, but can tolerate salinity.
I have been listening to the ABC radio about a child that was 'taken' in Kakadu National Park. The rains up here causes flooding, and the crocodiles move into areas that they may not have been before.
Like the beach.. Dundee Beach.
Vas and I went for a walk along the beach by the old boat ramp yesterday. It is a popular beach around here, as there is public access, and it stretches out for long enough to make up a pretty good walk. Yesterday, as we set about tackling the same distance we had covered the day before, someone took note of us, put their arms together and moved them up and down.. like the great jaws of a croc.
So we headed toward some people enjoying a 'cool one' on the beach and asked them if there was a croc around, or if we were just being teased by the locals.
"'ee was round 'ere earlier.. chasing the dog and such .. jus a little fellah.. maybe a couple of meters long.. big enough to eat yer dog ..or a kid"
Apparently crocodiles are known to be in this area.. there are a couple of swamps about where they spend their time for most of the year. But during the wet, the water is making channels into new places and even the locals don't know where they will be hiding.
The child on the radio was taken in Kakadu, which is on the east side as you drive south on the Stuart Highway from Darwin. We are closer to Litchfied National Park.
To get to our place, you drive by the turn off to the "Jumping Crocs" of the Adelaid river.. Vas took me for a river cruise along there last year.. it where I got the great shots of the crocs in that river..
It isn't a Big big deal.. but it is something I am going to have to think about.. and consider when I take the kids off the school grounds: wasn't really a worry in Mataranka.
The ocean is beautiful here.. but now I am listening to the guys on the radio talking about sharks.. not the little guys like the one that we watched some fishermen drag in, but the big, man-eating guys. The number is increasing..
And the locals talk about the box jelly fish..
If I do go for a swim, no worries, it will be in a pool some place. In the meantime, I am busy getting ready for school.. It starts tomorrow with a 'student free day'.
.. and so it begins!
