I stopped for a quesadilla at the I-Hop in Co-quitlam on my way to John's last Friday: they had a senior's section on the menu, and I qualified.
What is that about?
Don't they know I am Jocie Crabb?! Jackie and Jeri's little sister! Mom's baby girl! Monte, Gabe and Trav's young mother.. Adam's very young grandma.. Who is this woman that get's a senier's discount?
Me.. I'm getting older..
I say older.. not old. It's just what we do.
All of us.
From the time we are born we really are dying.
I watch these grandchildren of ours with different eyes than those that watched my children grow. A mother focuses on being a guide to her children: keeping them safe and getting them off to a good start. I don't remember ever imagining my children would get any older than about 30. They are frozen there... married.. happy.. with children of their own. Done.
But my grandchildren, well, it's different.
I wonder about their future. Their old age. I can see their whole journey, not just the small part that a parent takes responsibility for. I know the journey is a long one and all I wish for them is that it is a happy one: a rich one - a life with many parts, each different and even more rewarding than the one before it. A life that builds upon itself, upon the foundation that this parents are able to provide.
It is rather cool, this ageing process, even though it can hurt at times.. my joints ache... my back hurts.. sometimes my heart. But not always.. it takes a lot less to make me happy these days.
Spending time with 'the kids', Gabe and Nola, has been the definition of contentment.
I am living in my future and it is a nice place to be. I still have my sisters and they are doing the '60' thing first .. setting the standard yet again. I am still bossy jocie.. tagging along behind.
And the future looks good.
I expect as I truck along this path I will be getting even bigger discounts.. and the best seats on the bus, and who knows what else.
I have never been this old before.. it's does have it's advantages!
