Abby's Day

Abby’s Day

My little granddaughter is just six weeks old: she comes in a small, pink package. But big things sometimes come disguised in small bundles and such is the case with Abby.

Abigale Ila Jade’s day begins at about 4:30 a.m. these days. That is about the time the sun rises in Grande Prairie. Her cries wake her parents, but mom is the one that gets up.

Steph prepares a bottle and then brings Abby from her crib to her parents king size bed, to start the day. Abby is starving and drinks the bottle rapidly. A change of diapers and she's back in dreamland.

Mom is just about asleep again when Abby decides a second bottle is required. This one doesn’t go down quite so fast and Steph usually gives up on sleep, makes coffee and starts her day.

Abby has breakfast (another bottle) and is then placed in her little rocking chair: a very cool little device that plays classical music, swings back and forth, dangles toys and vibrates. Should keep a child busy and Abby loves it. She talks and coos and soon needs another bottle, and a nap.

When Abby wakes up she needs to be changed. She is loved and rocked by grandma or mother: she is not particular. She burps up most of the last bottle she drank and so is hungry again: more formula is made.

This sweet little girl loves being changed, which is good as it is the main activity of the day.

But she also loves shopping: getting loaded in a car seat and going for a drive. Abby is awake and often complains for a few minutes, but then falls deeply asleep. She goes directly from the car to the carriage, the car seat clips into both: an amazing device! .. as are the vibrating seats.

Returning home Abby has a bottle and falls asleep. For the next two hours the sounds of nursery music fills the house. Steph gets a chance to have a nap or read.

Waking up Abby is hungry again. Then she needs to be burped. Then changed. Then she demands yet another bottle. She finally falls asleep. But it is close to bedtime by now so she gets a bath.

After the bath, she is hungry of course, and no longer sleepy. Mom rocks her and talks to her, and as the time goes by she seems to be just more wide awake. Finally, at about 11:30, Abby is ready for bed.

By midnight, Steph can crawl into bed.

2 a.m. and little Abby is hungry again. Just a quick feed these days: maybe half a bottle and then back asleep.

At 4:30 a.m. a new day begins.

I am exhausted just watching this new little bundle of joy.

… and thankful this time around, I am just the grandma!
