A New Camera

I got a new camera at the Duty Free Store before I left Oz: a Nikon Cool Pix.  And it is just that.. very, very cool.

First of all it is small.  I love my Canon, but this one I can take in my purse instead of a suitcase.  With a back that constantly complains, I decided to travel to Canada a bit differently this time: I brought my MacBook Air instead of my regular Mac, with the word processor, and I left my big camera at home.  I managed to get everything into a little carry-on, and life was just.. easier!

I haven't been writing, mainly because it just not the same without spell-check. But, I have been taking pictures.

I took a picture of the racoon that greeted me the first evening I arrived.  Something was making the crows squawk.. I think this fellow may have been after eggs or babies or.. Racoons aren't too popular around this place: mom's plums are almost ready and it seems every year, the very day before they are ready to get picked, somebody.. somebody like this buddy.. beats our household to it.

Jackie is in Nanaimo right now, but most afternoons she is here.. in the shop.. carving Owls.  Some are small, some are big.. and these days, she is doing multiples: according to the shape of the wood.  Monte says he often sees owls, usually below him when he is rock climbing.. "They look at me as if to say 'what the heck are you doing way up here!'"

Jackie and Dave have kayaks, and when I go out on the water I get not only a different perspective on the world, but also seem to be a little closer to some of the wild life.  Jackie says she and Anna played with dolphin, and I have heard that the salmon are running and so are the Killer Whales, but I haven't seen them.  However, I did see the deer family on the island..

.... and some ducks.. Mergansers?

When the tide is out, the property extends itself well into the harbour.  The beach is covered with clam and oyster shells, barnacles, sharp rocks, and sea grass.  Snakes hide where they can, and blend in pretty well!  But.. they aren't dangerous.. just, well, surprising at times!

Sam is mom and dads new dog.  Jake brought him from Edmonton, and he is fitting into this family very well.  He loves the water, and this morning, came after me when I took off for a ride in the kayak.. just for a bit.

He was long gone by the time I found this family of geese on the other side of the property.  There are a couple large groups of geese around here: mom actually worries about them going after Sam.. if he gets to close to one or two, the others seem to circle around and try to get at him from the back.  Bloody smart if you ask me!

The herons aren't really bothered by me when I am in the Kayak.. as long as I don't get too close, they keep on fishing.

But it isn't just what is above the water that I am looking at.. this little Coolpix is good for 33 m underwater!  The Kayak has a little window in the bottom and lets me check when there may be something interesting going on down there.. and now, I can take pictures!                                                                                Of Starfish...

and seaweed...

and more seaweed ..in the sun.

The bottom is completely covered by live oysters shells under the bridge to Francis Peninsula, great in the winter time!

It's a beautiful world under there.. and now I have the means to capture it on film.  The Sunshine Coast with a camera that can stand the weather.. how lucky am I?!
